Early diagnosis of oral or pharyngeal cancer and head-and-neck skin cancer, such as melanoma is vitally important to saving lives. "Oral cancers are very dangerous because many times they are only discovered after the cancer has metastasized to another location," said Dr. Zide. Skin cancer accounts for five percent of all cancers in men and four percent of all cancers in women. Pigmented markings of the skin are know as moles, which are groups of melanocytes in the skin. While moles are generally harmless, they can become cancerous.
